FAW TRUCKS Helps You Select Trucks and Save Fuels∣FAW TRUCKS, Fuel-Saving Technology

The TCO Energy-Saving Contest and how to drive in a more fuel-efficient way were reported this week. Today, we discuss the “START” of operations. Starting from the selection of trucks, we try to help truck users to select fuel-saving models. This article is extracted from the 2022 White Paper: China Commercial Vehicle (Logistics) Fuel Saving Data and Insight jointly produced by FAW TRUCKS and industry partners such as TUC Media, SmartLink, CAERI, ANE Logistics, and Shell China. Considering that road conditions in some countries are very similar to those in China, we hope that we can provide overseas customers with some effective suggestions on how to select trucks.

Vehicle performance determines the lower limit of fuel consumption. Moreover, the fuel-saving effect of vehicles will vary greatly with the differences in fuel-saving technology of various OEM(Original Equipment Manufacturer). This article will take the internal core of vehicles – “three main parts” including engine, gearbox and drive-axle, electric control system, and thermal management as the entry point, and take the external rolling resistance, wind resistance, lightweight design into consideration, to expound comprehensively on the impact of vehicle performance on fuel consumption.

How to Select Engines for Fuel Saving

As the “heart” of vehicles, engines are the power source of the whole vehicle. Therefore, when selecting trucks, users will pay special attention to various parameters of trucks, such as the brand, horsepower, thermal efficiency, speed, and torque of engines. It is also necessary for them to select engines according to specific working conditions. For example, in the “Yunnan-Guizhou-Sichuan” region where the road grade is greater than that of other places, users should select large-horsepower engines because small-horsepower engines do less work and this situation increases climbing time. Then it indirectly makes fuel consumption much higher than that of large-horsepower engines.

In addition, although thermal efficiency determines fuel consumption, there is little difference in the technological level of high-end engines. Diesel engines of each model have an economic speed. If the engine speed were in the economic speed range, the engine would lead to lower fuel consumption. Then how do engine speed and torque affect fuel consumption on the condition of the same horsepower? Hereto, a formula is used to show the relationship between horsepower (horsepower is the unit of engine power), speed, and torque (output power). The formula is as follows:

Power (kW) = Torque (N·m) * Speed (r/min)/9549. The conclusion is that the smaller the engine speed is, the lower the friction work is, and then the easier it is to improve the thermal efficiency of engines; under the condition of a small working speed, the larger the torque is, the better the fuel economy of engines is.

The fuel economy of the gearbox and drive axle should not be underestimated

In addition to engines, gearboxes and drive-axles play a particularly important role in vehicle performance. The main purpose of gearboxes is to make engines work in the economic speed range, so as to improve fuel economy. In consideration of the performance of gearboxes and drive-axles, the higher the drive efficiency is, the lower the fuel consumption is. In the current market, the maximum drive efficiency of gearboxes is generally in the range of 93% to 96%. The autonomous gearboxes and drive-axles of FAW TRUCKS improve the drive efficiency of the gearbox and drive-axle assembly by reducing friction and decreasing resistance etc. to achieve a comprehensive efficiency of 95.6%.

Users should also select the appropriate overall gear ratio because the use of gear ratio is directly linked with the use demands of customers. The overall gear ratio of road transport tractors is basically between 2.7 and 3.2 according to the timeliness or commonly-used speed requirements of customers; engineering dump trucks basically between 4 and 5, and cargo trucks basically between 3 and 4.

Moreover, more and more users currently select automatic gearboxes, and this will become another trend of fuel saving in the future. The AMT transmission of FAW TRUCKS can provide customized calibration schemes for users according to their commonly-used working conditions, balance the vehicle’s power and economy, and achieve differentiated fuel-saving schemes.

What is the Impact of Rolling Resistance and Wind Resistance on Fuel Consumption

The higher the coefficient of rolling resistance is, the higher the fuel consumption is. The fuel consumption caused by the rolling resistance of tires can almost account for 20% to 40% of the overall fuel consumption. In 2016, the central government and various tire enterprises drafted the Standard for Grading of Tire Parameters, which made an accurate classification of domestic (within China) tires and divided tires into Grades A to G according to different coefficients of rolling resistance. In the case of C3 tires (heavy trucks, trailers, and semitrailers), Grade A means tires with a coefficient of rolling resistance below 4.0, namely, the tires with the relatively least rolling resistance in the same vehicle conditions. Tires with a rolling resistance coefficient of 8.1 or above are divided into Grade F (Grade G is the standard for C1/C2 passenger vehicle tires). Take the full-load tractor with a gross weight of 49 tons that carries fast freight on the highway for example. The fuel consumption is 31.6L/100km when the vehicle is equipped with Grade A tires with a 4.0N/kN rolling resistance coefficient. The fuel consumption of Grade B tires with a rolling resistance coefficient of 5.0N/kN is 34.1L /100km under measured conditions.

In general, when the vehicle speed is above 60km/h, the wind resistance of the whole vehicle will exceed the rolling resistance. As the speed increases, the wind resistance grows rapidly. Therefore, in the highway transportation scenario, wind resistance is the main resistance for running vehicles. Reducing wind resistance can significantly decrease fuel consumption. The wind resistance coefficient of each vehicle directly affects fuel consumption. The smaller the wind resistance coefficient is, the more stable the vehicle is in the process of driving, and then the more fuel-saving it is.

How should we manage wind resistance? Other than avoiding opening windows at high speeds, it is hard to control wind resistance through any other driving behaviors. Because wind resistance is mainly affected by the appearance of the heads of trucks, what we can do is to select more suitable heads and improve the appearance of vehicles. In addition, users can also modify the appearance of trucks to reduce the wind resistance coefficient, such as adding aerodynamic accessories. Air deflectors, lateral protection devices, and bottom guards with which we are familiar can all relatively reduce the wind resistance coefficient of vehicles. Experimental data show that aerodynamic accessories such as air deflectors, lateral protection devices, and bottom guards installed on the head of tractors can reduce wind resistance at high speed and save fuel about 3 to 4L/100km.

Technological Support of Lightweight to Fuel Consumption

It is the general knowledge of the industry that the heavier the vehicle is, the higher the fuel consumption is. How should we essentially reduce the weight of vehicles? There are three ways to change the weight of vehicles themselves and the weight of rotary components: First, we can change the use of materials to achieve the purpose of lightweight. For example, the outer covering parts of the cab can be made of lightweight covering materials. Second, the expected lightweight can be realized through the new casting process. Third, lightweight can be achieved through structural design. For instance, structural analysis is used to optimize the design of the structure, so as to reduce useless materials and decrease the number of parts, etc. to achieve lightweight.

FAW TRUCKS is the top commercial vehicle brand in China, and its core advantage is fuel saving, especially the fuel-saving technology in terms of the power and Internet of Vehicles, such as high compression ratio fast combustion technology, integrated exhaust high-efficiency pulse supercharging technology, fully autonomous power domain technology, driving behavior monitoring technology, and so on. They have helped FAW TRUCKS always take a leading position in the industry in terms of fuel-saving effects. According to the feedback from users of express delivery, express transportation, cold chain, and hazardous chemicals, enterprises that have used Internet of Vehicles products achieve better fuel-saving effects.

Fuel saving is the basis of low-carbon transformation. We hope this article can provide green, fuel-saving, and other practical suggestions for overseas truck users.
